Chiltepin Salsa

This delicious all-purpose salsa can be used for dipping, seasoning, as a taco or enchilada sauce. Because the bushes that produce the chiles grow wild in parts of Southern Arizona and aren't common to other regions, you will need to purchase chiltepin chiles online.

Ingredients

1 - 28 ounce can whole tomatoes

10 garlic cloves

2 tablespoons oregano

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon maple syrup or date paste

1 1/2 teaspoons chiltepin chiles - a little goes a long way, so if you prefer a milder salsa, cut the amount of chiles down to 1 teaspoon

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender and thoroughly blend. This salsa can be kept in glass jars for up to two months in the refrigerator.

NOTE: Because the bushes that produce these chiles grow wild in parts of Southern Arizona and aren't common to other regions, you will need to purchase chiltepin chiles online. Substituting another chile will not produce the authentic flavor of this popular SW salsa.
